Aisles and chasms.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said long ago that 11:00 on Sunday morning is "the most segregated hour in America". I've seen precious little change in that reality in recent years, which leads me to believe that (1) people are willingly self-segregating themselves and (2) that most people prefer to "church" with those that are most like them. If my theories are true -- and I have a sneaking suspicion that they're on target -- it is a sad commentary on post-Civil Rights era race relations. People will defend this self-segregation by saying "white services are too dull" or that "black folks dance too much in church", without looking around and seeing just how much cross-pollination has taken place in American religious life; so much as to make such stilted comparisons almost laughable. | Read Cecily's full entry at Formica's "House of Prayer/Den of Thieves" posted in weblogs on August 1, 2003 9:56 PM | t (0) « Previous phile: Reaching out even more to white voters. » Next phile: A killing field on the back burner.
