Catching up with Farmer Brown.
If you are 55.3 years old, have farmed for 20.7 years, farm 441 acres, and make $97,320 in total sales and government payments, with a net cash farm income of $19,320 you are the average American farmer, according to the 2002 Census of Agriculture. The National Agricultural Statistics Service released the results today. The census shows some interesting trends. One such trend is that more women and more minorities are principal operators of farms. In 2002 72.5% of farm operators were men, and 27.5% were women. About 147,000 of primary operators classify themselves as Spanish/Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, or Native Hawiian/Pacific Islander.
