Scant heed to African American architects, interior designers, artists, decorators, contractors and homeowners.
"The numbers are low because a lot of American Americans are not aware of the career, and, to be honest, a lot of them did not see their parents using interior designers. Your parents geared you to be doctors, lawyers or to work for the government. Something like interior design was seen as creative, like being in the arts and therefore not profitable." | A quote from Allusions Interior Design owner Stephanie Gowdy in Annie Groer's Washington Post article "Local Designers, Showing Their Colors" posted in articles on September 24, 2003 11:40 PM | t (0) « Previous phile: Then, as now, let the freedom buses roll. » Next phile: Continuing to treat its creators as if they were worthless. Years ago I started an Organization to locate Africian American Interior Designers in the Los Angeles area because I did wonder were we were. The organization started off strong however overtime their was little support. I learned that there were very few professionals really working in the field. There were many that called themselves Interior Designers but did not have the training. I started in the business over 23 years ago and at that time there were none. I believe today Africian Americans are aware that Interior Design is a career and a field you can make a living. Look for more Africian Americans in this field to come.
