It is a sure bet that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. did not have a ski slope in mind when, in one of his most-quoted speeches, he talked of reaching the "mountaintop." However, King's lofty goals of equal opportunity for all Americans is being realized, in part, on snowcapped mountains across America, as more and more African Americans take to the slopes, especially during Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. This weekend, members of Sacramento's Ebony Ski Club and a dozen other African American ski clubs will make their annual trek up the hill to Winter Carnival 2004. The event is expected to draw nearly 700 skiers and snowboarders from throughout the West.
